What is a Family Tree?
An Overview | What is a Family Tree? | Important Dates | Your Family List | What is GEDCOM?

Detailing our heritage to understand the present is an important part of knowing who we are. Although most people usually take it for granted and devote little time to studying or thinking about it, the past is responsible for everything we are. It is the core of our humanity. To understand how and why we live as we do, we cannot avoid appealing to the past to explain how and why we got to be this way. Family trees invite us to explore the past — the world out of which we came.

A family tree is a chart or other visual format depicting the lineage of family genealogy. Relationships and lines of descendents are shown in a family tree chart such as this...

Tools, such as our family tree maker, are used to create family trees. Families are represented as branches on the tree in both ascending (ancestral) and descending (descendents) order... infinitely. The branches are the marriages (or unions) that led to children. Each marriage or union that led to children would then be a stem formed by two people that branched out as many times as there are children from that union. Any children resulting from that union may, in turn, have children of their own, and so forth and so on. A tree with branches is the easiest visual form of a family heritage. Our family tree maker creates a visually engaging format for representing family genealogy. You can connect with the biographies of other family members to build a family tree and preserve your legacy.

Thus, your family tree is a visual of all the interconnected biographies which are related to you. This is true for all those who came before you, and for all those who will come after you — your family tree will build indefinitely, and your family's descendants will always be able to click on your biography when they view the family tree.
